The iPhone 5S May Come In Colours Just Like the iPod Touch
Apple's iPhone 5S may be available in multiple colours, just like Apple's iPod touch. That means colour options beyond the black and white. Apple knows that colourful devices are something some iPhone buyers are already paying hundreds of dollars for and would be a way to generate more profits.
Current rumours are pointing to an upgraded iPhone 5S, rather than an all-new iPhone 6. Apple’s followed the pattern of keeping the same external design for two generations.
While the original iPhone was available only in black, Apple’s subsequent iPhones were shipped in both black and white, though the white iPhone 4 was released eight months after the black version. There was a lot of outcry from iPhone users that had to settle for a black iPhone 4 rather than the white one they had their hearts set on. Colour does matter to iPhone users.
iPhone buyers will definitely get excited over choosing from six or more colours, just like they can with the iPod touch. Apple knows that people like personalizing their devices by adding engraving which is an available online order option. Colour is the next logical step, given the success of the colourful iPod Touch.
It’s only a matter of time before Apple starts selling colour as a feature that adds value to the iPhone purchase.
AnoStyle Already Customizes Your iPhone's Colour
Apple users with money to burn can already buy colourful iPhone 5s or upgrade their current units. AnoStyle re-anodizes users’ own iPhone 5s in 14 colours. colourWave sells the iPhone 5 unlocked and in just about any colour for $1,200. colourwave offers 46 colours, but goes a step further than AnoStyle by allowing iPhone 5 users to select different colours and finishes for the phone’s top, bottom, back, SIM card tray and home button.
Colour is Fashion and Status
Colourful iPhones stand out from the crowd and draw attention to your devices. Smartphones and tablets have become fashion accessories, especially in emerging markets where possessing these devices is a status symbol.
The Value Proposition of Colour
(1) Generate Buzz
Colourful iPhones will create a lot of excitement and discussion around the new colour choices amongst those buying an iPhone for the first time or who are upgrading from an iPhone that’s more than a year old.
(2) Upgrade Incentive
It will also give iPhone 5 buyers an excuse to upgrade to the iPhone 5S early. It will also match Android and Windows Phone manufacturers’ strategy of stressing colour choice in marketing materials and ads.
(3) Status Symbolism
A lot of iPhone users care about appearances and want the world to know they’re carrying the latest and greatest model. Today it is almost impossible to tell if someone’s using an iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S from a visual inspection. The same is true for the iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS. The colours would be a way to build status symbol brand power.
