Anticipated Apple product releases in 2013

The next 9.7-inch iPad will leverage design cues from its smaller sibling, the 7.9-inch iPad mini.

There are many speculations about what is coming next from Apple. With Steve Jobs no longer overseeing the product line I worry that Apple may be on a downward spiral but I am seeing some signs of encouragement.

So what is projected to be next for Apple? These are all in the realm of speculation so take these statements as rumours and are by no means facts.

Disappointing iPhone 5 and Fourth-Generation iPad

I was very disappointed with iPhone 5 and the iPad with Retina Display. The iPhone 5 seemed to have an awkward thin tall screen size and a cheap case that scratched. It just didn't come up to the standards I was expecting from Apple's design team. The new Lightening connector upgrade didn't pose a big issue for me because it was about time the cable was replaced with a smaller connector.

The iPad with Retina Display runs hot and is difficult to hold for long periods, especially with graphics intensive apps. The most recent iPad is also heavier than the iPad 2. I decided to stick with my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 because I preferred these older devices. I have been waiting for the iPad mini with Retina display.

Fifth-generation iPad

The full-size iPad is predicted to become thinner, lighter and arrive in 2013. This will be the fifth-generation redesign.

The next 9.7-inch iPad will leverage design cues from its smaller sibling, the 7.9-inch iPad mini (KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo).

The new full-size iPad is expected to have the narrow border design found in the iPad mini. Just like the iPad mini the new iPad will have software enhancements that detect and ignore unintended touches due to one-hand use.

The fifth-generation iPad is expected in the third quarter of 2013, although some analysts believe this new device could launch in March 2013. This is possible because Apple now has a twice-per-year upgrade cycle for the iPad. Apple announced a new fourth-generation iPad in October 2012, featuring a new Lightning dock connection, as well as a faster A6X processor. This device may be around for longer pushing out the date for the fifth-generation iPad.

iPad mini with Retina display

An updated iPad mini with a high-resolution Retina display is expected (2,048-by-1,536-pixel resolution). The technical challenge involves packing more pixels per inch onto a smaller 7.9-inch display.

Apples full-fledged HDTV television (iTV)

Some analysts predict that Apple will launch a full-fledged television in 2013. Apple is known to blind-side analysts so anything is possible. A more conservative possibility is a refreshed Apple TV set-top box in Q1 2013.

An Apple HDTV (iTV) is not expected until 2014.

Possible Roadmap

This is all speculative and is based on rumours, trends, and previous Apple behaviour.
